Abstract

The general objective of this research was to determine the integration of open spaces into the teaching of history and geography at the Fernando Arturo de Meriño and Socorro del Rosario Sánchez educational centers, District 16-03 of Cevicos. This research used a non-experimental, descriptive design. A sample of 39 teachers and 341 students from the educational centers under study was taken, to whom two questionnaires were applied: one for teachers and one for students, which made it possible to properly gather the relevant information. Among the variables studied in this research are the demographic characteristics of the population, the integration of open spaces, and the strategies developed in the teaching of history and geography.

The study showed that the majority of teachers are between the ages of 36 and 40 and less than half between 31 and 35 years old, while the majority of students are between the ages of 12 and 17. It was observed in relation to sexthat about 60% of the studied population corresponds to the female sex and the remaining 40% to the male. It wasfound that 20% of teachers have a bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, 60% have a specialty and 20% have a master’s degree.

It was determined that the majority of teachers integrate elements of the open space in the classroom duringteaching. In reference to the use of pedagogical outputs, which allows teachers and students to insert themselves into the environment and the integration of the space open to the teaching and learning process of history and geography, the study confirms the very limited use of this activity, These results also express that educational excursions are never carried out in educational centers, according to the teachers and students consulted.

It was found that teachers include the participatory classroom project as an educational strategy in teacher planningfor the integration of open spaces. However, students believe that this is not executed, so it is considered that although it is reflected in the planning, it is executed theoretically and in a limited way in the classroom and not as an activity that must be inserted to teachers and students in the environment for knowledge of the elements of the surrounding space, as required by the Dominican curriculum.
