Use and management of teaching resources in the area of natural sciences at the Dr. Miguel Ángel García Viloria Secondary School in the municipality of Villa la Mata, Educational District 16-01 Cotuí, school year 2005-2006

Abstract

Having observed the problem that exists at the Dr. Miguel Ángel García Viloria Lyceum in the Municipality of Villa La Mata in the area of Natural Sciences teaching, this educational center, like others, apparently has few resources to acquire appropriate teaching methods for the Natural Sciences subject, and in other cases teachers apparently lack adequate training to develop teaching aids, which clearly makes this a problem worthy of study. The study is composed of the design, universe and sample, validity, procedures, and data analysis: the research showed that most teachers and students are female, and that demographic factors have no influence. Regarding level and postgraduate studies of teachers. It was verified that teachers always use teaching aids and that the school provides these resources. Recommendations: To the university: as an institution of higher education, it should include in the Natural Sciences curriculum a subject with more practical hours. To Regional Education Office No. 16: it is requested that Natural Sciences teachers be grouped by courses in order to achieve more effective learning. To District 16-01: that workshops and conferences be prepared in the area of Natural Sciences emphasizing the use and management of teaching aids. To directors and teachers: to identify which teaching aids are missing from the laboratory in order to acquire them, and to review student absences to determine whether this is the reason some students say the aids are not used. To students: to increase their interest in learning Natural Sciences, so that they learn to form critical judgments, seek causal explanations for events, and engage in discussions with reasoned personal opinions.
