Rearing of phytophagous and predatory mites under laboratory conditions

Abstract
This paper presents a review of the techniques used to maintain, at the laboratory level, colonies of mites belonging to the family Phytoseiidae, the genus Tetranychus Dufour (Acari: Tetranychidae), and Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). Phytoseiids and tetranychids are important mites in protected crops, the former as biological control agents and the latter as pests. Meanwhile, R. indica is an invasive exotic pest that could put dozens of native or naturalized palm species at risk. Rearing phytophagous and predatory mites is widely used in applied entomology. However, in the Dominican Republic there is currently no documentation on the use and maintenance of such rearing at the laboratory level. For these reasons, it is necessary to disseminate the different techniques used. This document is expected to be useful for researchers, professors, and students in conducting experiments or practical work, as well as for producers engaged in small-scale biological control.
