Abstract

The Capacho Stream originates in the Arroyo Hondo section of the Municipality of Cotuí, at La Loma Quita Sueño, and is the most important watershed in the urban area, since for years community members drew water from it for their basic needs. The state of deterioration of much of its water network, together with population growth, is a concern and has a major environmental impact. It is urgent to take action aimed at halting and remedying its deterioration.

The proposal for a Comprehensive Sanitation Plan for the Arroyo Capacho basin, both its main drainage and its tributaries was born as a concern of the UTE- CO, to improve the environmental conditions of Capa- cho, andtherefore, the health of the community, well it is known of the diseases that generate the pollution of the waters. That is why in the first stage you must de- termine the real conditions of the stream, before wor- king with the plan itself.

It has been divided into three stages; I-Stage of Identification and Diagnosis, II- Stage of awareness campaign and proposals for improvements and envi- ronmental remediation, Stage III- Execution of favora- ble proposals for eachcase. With these three stages, the SAAC must successfully complete a positive change that can serve as an example andtourist destination for the residents of the province and other communities of the country.

A hydrographic network consists of a main flow and its tributaries. The SAAC Project aims to take co- rrective measures throughout the basin. The main ru- noff of the Arroyo goes through several sectors; The Estancia, Santa Fe, Pueblo Nuevo, El Paraíso, Las Flores, Cuesta Hermosa and several private estates, has an approximate distance of11.87 km from its source to its mouth in the Maguaca river.
