Abstract

After a thorough analysis of the data obtained, the research team reached the following conclusions: most administrative staff and teachers (50% and 89%, respectively) are female; directors and teachers are mostly 40 or older (100% and 43%), reflecting sufficient experience; most students are 12–13 years old (44%), appropriate for their grade; the population resides predominantly in urban areas (100% of directors, 86% of teachers, 83% of students); most directors and teachers are married (100% and 61%); half of directors hold a technical degree and half a graduate degree, while 54% of teachers hold a bachelor's degree in basic education. Regarding evaluation practice, 57% of teachers consider sociocultural context when organizing lessons, while 36% do not apply the criteria established in Ordinance 1'96. School performance in main learning areas ranged from 71 to 82 points, an adequate level. Directors and teachers reported research assignments, practical exercises, and participation as the main evaluation methods used. It is recommended that the Secretary of State for Education fund graduate studies for directors and teachers, that Educational District 16-01 of Cotuí encourage proper application of Ordinance 1'96, that directors implement pedagogical training workshops, and that teachers follow the evaluation criteria of Ordinance 1'96 more closely.
