Abstract
The objective of this research is to analyze the impact of school guidance counseling on the academic performance of second-cycle Basic Education students at the Antiguo Liceo School. Based on the data obtained from the various stakeholders and the review of bibliographic sources related to this research, the following conclusions can be drawn: the Antiguo Liceo School has a guidance program that takes into account all stages of the school year. Members of the school leadership, or the school director, considered the guidance program to be good. According to the stakeholders surveyed, the center's guidance program is of great importance and has a significant impact on students' academic performance and the development of their potential. The center's guidance program benefits all stakeholders in the educational process, primarily through behavioral change, encouragement to study, and the institution's overall image. More than 50% of parents and teachers surveyed stated that, thanks to guidance services, students significantly improve their grades, which powerfully impacts their academic performance. The guidance program contributes to strengthening interpersonal relationships among students, teachers, directors, and parents. The main obstacles to implementing the guidance program are the lack of physical space and resources. Most of the guidance counselor's working time is devoted to attending to students with learning and behavioral problems. Based on the data provided by respondents, the guidance department's activities are strengthened by frequent parental participation. Teachers frequently refer students to the guidance department, in many cases for reasons that, in our view, they themselves should address. The three main reasons teachers refer students to the guidance department are fights in the classroom, discipline problems, and learning problems. The predominant sex among students at this educational center is male, a trend contrary to the general population, where females predominate numerically. The average age of students falls within normal parameters for the Basic Education level. At the center under study, 10% of students are over-age, which is a potential cause of imbalance in the classroom and the center. 44% of students at the center live with only one parent, reflecting a high degree of family breakdown. 64% of students at the center perform some type of work, frequently or occasionally. A large number of students receive no support from their parents in doing schoolwork. According to the results obtained in this research, the main problems present within students' families are disobedience, conflict, and low self-esteem. Parents very rarely visit the guidance department to inquire about their children's performance and behavior.
