mining legacy: environmental liabilities and their impact on margajita river water resources

Abstract
This research assessed the impact of mining environmental liabilities on the water resources of the Margajita River basin, Cotui, Sanchez Ramirez province, Dominican Republic. A descriptive methodology was used, with monthly physicochemical monitoring between April and July 2024 at three sampling stations. The parameters evaluated included pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. The results reveal an extremely acidic pH of 4.75 in May at station Margajita 3, indicative of acid leaching from sulfide minerals. Electrical conductivity reached 3,892 uS/cm in June at Margajita 1, far exceeding typical values for uncontaminated rivers. Remediation measures are proposed, including constructed wetlands, riparian reforestation, continuous monitoring, and community environmental education programs.
