Abstract
At the Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal Lyceum there are serious learning difficulties, because students receive little guidance from their parents at home—sometimes because the parents are illiterate and cannot help with homework, do not visit the schools to check on their children's performance, or are occupied with multiple responsibilities at home and work, often out of neglect. These shortcomings continue when students arrive at the lyceum, where teachers show little concern for their students' learning and do not encourage the development of reading habits, which are fundamental to individuals' cultural enrichment. Likewise, school directors do not provide teachers with the support they need to perform their duties well. The research design was descriptive. The population comprised the entire body of the director and teachers, while a sample was taken from the students and parents of the morning shift. The instrument used to measure the variables was a questionnaire. Data were processed manually using a calculator and presented in tables and graphs showing sample size, frequency, and percentages. The director, teachers, adolescents, and parents do not devote enough time to reading, so their reading habits are not favorable. Demographic characteristics do not negatively affect reading habits. It is recommended that the director, teachers, and parents read more frequently in order to encourage reading habits among adolescents.
