Abstract

According to the investigations that have been made in relation to the origins of this community, it is believed that it had its historical antecedents since the beginning of the colonization on the island with the name of “Camino Real”, its status was limited to the authority of the Cacique Guarionex being part of the Maguá chiefdom. The name “La Mata” arose in 1948, already at that time belonging to the demarcation of San Francisco de Macorís. The first to arrive in the community were the Romero, Los Rondón, Los Galán, Los Moya, Los María, Los Suazo, Los Núñez, Los Hernández. Los Farias, among others. Since the first settlers of Villa La Mata arrived, they dedicated themselves to agricultural production, mainly rice cultivation. It is argued that, during the government of the dictatorship of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, (1930), the construction of the main canal was ordered to irrigate the lands dedicated to rice planting in the Sánchez Ramírez province, and Las Guáranas, San Francisco Macorís. From this main channel, the construction of others was contin- ued to facilitate water access to the rice plots that are cultivated throughout the territory of what is now the municipality of La Mata and other areas of the province. In this municipality, ba- nana, pineapple, corn, beans, pigeon peas, sweet potato, yucca, orange, milky are grown, among other items. In recent decades, this community has grown a lot in all areas, but especially in the aspect of education. In the same sense, the demand for schools has been growing, which is why it was necessary to request the creation of a new educational district in order to decongest the district 16-01 of Cotui, since a large part of the schools in mu- nicipality of villa La Mata belonged to the municipality of Cotui.
