Abstract

The Code for the System for the Protection of the Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents defines a child as any person from birth up to and including age 12, and an adolescent as any person from age 13 until reaching legal adulthood. This study is non-experimental, since the researchers did not deliberately manipulate the variables; within this category, it corresponds to a descriptive, cross-sectional type, since the data were collected at a single point in time. Since guidance counselors constituted a small population (8), all of them were studied. In addition, the universe consisted of 142 teachers in the afternoon shift in the urban area of Cotuí, of whom 103 were studied according to the Krejcie and Morgan sampling table. The first review was documentary, using content record cards during the project development process; the survey technique was then used during fieldwork. The factors that place children at risk are having unprotected sexual relations and receiving negative influence from peers; other factors with lower incidence include being the children of adolescent parents and having low self-esteem. Adolescent girls who become pregnant suffer various emotional consequences, the most frequent according to this study being fear, guilt, and depression. It is suggested that school directors approach the Secretariat of State for Public Health (Provincial Health Office) so that they can work together on behalf of young people, and it is suggested that the Secretariat of State for Public Health (Provincial Health Office) approach educational centers to explore the possibility of implementing a program to reduce the number of pregnancies.
